Michael Lewis, Executive Chairman of Riverston International, part of the Riverston Group™ based in London and Mrs. Angela Fubler, Founder and Director of Chatmore British International School (CBIS), Bermuda, have agreed to establish a joint venture to nurture and expand CBIS as well as extending Riverston’s international footprint.
The school was established in 2004 and has grown significantly from its language-acquisition pre-school and child study centre origins into Chatmore, the first and only COBIS accredited school in Bermuda.
With an emphasis on outdoor and adventure-based leaning, Chatmore occupies a wonderfully verdant 4-acre site in Smith’s Parish (close to Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda) with a tennis court, working gardens, and robust green spaces wholly conducive to children’s learning, play and healthy physical development. Keen to provide an inclusive and integrated setting, Chatmore identified Riverston as an ideal partner to assist with the creation of a more specialist curriculum, teaching resources and accredited staff development.
Mrs. Fubler said, ‘Having established and grown the school over the past 14 years, I knew we needed support to achieve my ambitions for CBIS. Although we are the first school in Bermuda to simultaneously offer the International Early Years Curriculum; International Primary Curriculum; and, International Middle Years Curriculum, with our senior students studying the International GCSE curriculum, we wanted to offer a more individualised education.
After much searching in the USA as well as in Europe and beyond, we identified Riverston with its 90 year’s tradition in providing an outstanding bespoke education for children of all abilities, as ideal partners. Riverston’s model and philosophy is particularly well-suited to our Family First Schools ™ values and ethos.’ Professor Michael Lewis added, ‘This partnership works particularly well for Riverston. We prefer to work in schools where individual attention can readily be provided to students of all abilities, including those with additional learning requirements and mild/moderate special educational needs, to maximise individual learning. For Riverston this venture provides a great opportunity to join with Chatmore to become the first school of its kind on the island.’
The new Chatmore will maintain high expectations, a very full timetable and a wide range of subjects with each child having a bespoke curriculum. Small class numbers in a truly inclusive and integrated setting will enable students of all abilities to maximise their individual talents together, in an environment that is truly supportive and child centric. Specialist therapy services, counselling and pastoral care will feature prominently as will a range of vocational subjects including performing arts, agriculture, food technology, tourism and hospitality. Chatmore will be large enough to have the feel of a mainstream school but small enough to give each child the individual support they need. With this unique partnership, Chatmore will continue to realise its vision as a diverse, socially and ability mixed co-educational independent day school for children and families in Bermuda.
